  1.                   INSTALLATION AND STARTUP GUIDE FOR

  3.                 OWL AUTOMATED SALES & INVOICING SYSTEM

  8. This  guide covers installation and startup of OASIS Version 1.3.  The 
  9. complete  User's  Guide  is  built into the program and is accessed by 
  10. selecting  the  "HELP"  option.  In order to get the most benefit from 
  11. this program, we strongly suggest that you read the user's guide.
  12.  
  13.  
  14. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  15.  
  16. OASIS  Version  1.3 requires an IBM Compatible PC, DOS 3.3 or above, a 
  17. hard disk and 640k of RAM memory.  
  18.  
  19.  
  20. DOS CONFIGURATION
  21.  
  22. For  proper  operation of all functions, the program requires that the 
  23. number  of  DOS  file  handles  be  set to 21 or more.  This number is 
  24. established  when  you  boot  your computer and is derived as either a 
  25. default  value  or  from  the  standard  file  "CONFIG.SYS" which must 
  26. reside  in the root directory of your start-up disk drive.  For proper 
  27. operation,  you  MUST HAVE the file "CONFIG.SYS" in the root directory 
  28. of  your start-up disk and it MUST contain the line "FILES=21" (values 
  29. above  21  are  acceptable).   Assuming  your  start-up  disk is the C 
  30. drive, you can create this file very quickly by typing the following:
  31.  
  32.      COPY CON: C:\CONFIG.SYS
  33.      FILES=21
  34.      Ctrl-Z      (Press "Ctrl" and "Z" keys together)
  35.  
  36. If  file  CONFIG.SYS  already  exists,  use  a text editor to view and 
  37. modify  the  file  as  needed.   Once  you  have  added  or edited the 
  38. "CONFIG.SYS"  file,  YOU MUST RE-BOOT your computer for the changes to 
  39. take effect.  Consult your DOS manual for additional information.
  40.  
  41. UPGRADING FROM EARLIER VERSIONS
  42.  
  43. If  you  are  presently  using an earlier version of OASIS and wish to 
  44. transfer  your  data  from the earlier version to this version, before 
  45. installing  this  version of OASIS use the "BACKUP" option in the File 
  46. menu  of  your  old  version  to  copy  your  data  files  to a floppy 
  47. diskette.   After completing the installation of this version, use the 
  48. "RESTORE"  option  in  this  version to copy your earlier version data 
  49. files into this version.

  51. INSTALLATION (From Distribution Disk)
  52.  
  53. The  program,  data, and help files are contained in a self extracting 
  54. archive  file named OASIS10.EXE.  To extract the contents of this file 
  55. and  install  them  on your hard disk, place the distribution diskette 
  56. in drive A and type the following commands:
  57.  
  58.      A:
  59.      INSTALL C
  60.  
  61. You  may  install the program from the B drive by substituting "B" for 
  62. "A"  in  the above and you may install the files to a hard drive other 
  63. than  C  by  substituting  the appropriate drive letter for "C" in the 
  64. above.   (Note:  there  is  no  colon  (":")  following the hard drive 
  65. letter in the install command).

  67. After  entering  the install command, all files will be installed in a 
  68. subdirectory named "\OASIS" on the designated hard drive.

  71. INSTALLATION (From BBS DOWNLOAD)
  72.  
  73. If  you  downloaded OASIS from a bulletin board or other data service, 
  74. you  will  have  already  extracted  all  files  from the ZIP or other 
  75. archive  file  you  downloaded.  Create a directory on your hard drive 
  76. named  "\OASIS"  to  hold  the  extracted files and copy all extracted 
  77. files  to the new directory.  Note:  the original ZIP or other archive 
  78. file should be stored off on a floppy disk and kept as a backup.

  81. RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  82.  
  83. To run the OASIS type the following commands:
  84.  
  85.      C:
  86.      CD \OASIS
  87.      OASIS
  88.  
  89. If  you installed the program on a hard drive other than C, substitute 
  90. the appropriate drive letter for "C" in the above.
  91.  
  92.  
  93. SAMPLE DATA
  94.  
  95. The  data  files shipped with the program contain sample data which is 
  96. provided  to  help  you  become  familiar with the various options and 
  97. capabilities  of  the  program.   The sample data covers calendar year 
  98. 1992.

  101. LATE CHANGES
  102.  
  103. A  new  option  named "Customer Profile" that is not documented in the 
  104. user's  guide  has  been  added  to  the  customer  menu.  This option 
  105. produces  a  report detailing the products purchased by each customer.  
  106. The  report,  which can be generated for either a selected customer or 
  107. all  customers  lists the customer's name and address and the purchase 
  108. date and product code of each product purchased by that customer.
  109.  
  110. A  new  option  named  "Registration" has been added to the file menu.  
  111. This  option  provides  for  entry  of your registration number and/or 
  112. printing  of  the  order  form.   It  replaces  the "Print Order Form" 
  113. option  in  the  help submenu and the "Registration No." option in the 
  114. Setup submenu.
  115.  
  116. TROUBLE SHOOTING
  117.  
  118. While  every  effort is made to insure that OASIS is free of any bugs, 
  119. it  is  impossible  to  test  it on all makes and models of computers.  
  120. Therefore,  unforeseen  circumstances  can occur which may create real 
  121. or  perceived errors in the program.  The following is a brief list of 
  122. errors which may be encountered and what to do about them.
  123.  
  124. Out  of  Memory  or  Insufficient  Swap  Space - You don't have enough 
  125. memory  below  640K to run the program.  If your computer has at least 
  126. 512K  of RAM, you should be able to eliminate this problem by removing 
  127. memory  resident  programs  (TSR'S) and device drivers (mouse drivers, 
  128. network drivers, etc.) to free up memory.  If  you are using  DOS 6.0,
  129. removing the  "NOEMS"  switch from EMM386 in your  CONFIG.SYS file may 
  130. solve the problem.
  131.  
  132. Program  Locks  Up - OASIS uses expanded memory, if available, to swap 
  133. sections  of  code  in  and  out  of  memory.   Some  older disk cache 
  134. software  does  not  expect  this  and can overwrite areas used by the 
  135. program.   To  prevent  this,  run  the  program  with  the  following 
  136. command:
  137.  
  138.      OASIS //BADCACHE
  139.  
  140. Program  Aborts  with  Message  (DOS  error  04)  -  This  means  that 
  141. insufficient  DOS  file  handles  have  been  specified.   If you have 
  142. already  added  the line FILES=21 to your CONFIG.SYS file AND rebooted 
  143. your  computer,  try  increasing  the  number a few at a time.  Reboot 
  144. your computer each time you increase the number.  
  145.  
  146. Program  Aborts  with  Message  (DOS  error  34)  - This is a DOS file 
  147. sharing error.  Run the DOS program SHARE.EXE before running OASIS.
  148.  
  149. If  at any time you are unable to resolve a problem with this program, 
  150. call  or  write  us  a  letter  explaining  the nature of the problem.
