INSTALLATION AND STARTUP GUIDE FOR
OWL AUTOMATED SALES & INVOICING SYSTEM
(OASIS)
VERSION 1.3
This guide covers installation and startup of OASIS Version 1.3. The
complete User's Guide is built into the program and is accessed by
selecting the "HELP" option. In order to get the most benefit from
this program, we strongly suggest that you read the user's guide.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
OASIS Version 1.3 requires an IBM Compatible PC, DOS 3.3 or above, a
hard disk and 640k of RAM memory.
DOS CONFIGURATION
For proper operation of all functions, the program requires that the
number of DOS file handles be set to 21 or more. This number is
established when you boot your computer and is derived as either a
default value or from the standard file "CONFIG.SYS" which must
reside in the root directory of your start-up disk drive. For proper
operation, you MUST HAVE the file "CONFIG.SYS" in the root directory
of your start-up disk and it MUST contain the line "FILES=21" (values
above 21 are acceptable). Assuming your start-up disk is the C
drive, you can create this file very quickly by typing the following:
COPY CON: C:\CONFIG.SYS
FILES=21
Ctrl-Z (Press "Ctrl" and "Z" keys together)
If file CONFIG.SYS already exists, use a text editor to view and
modify the file as needed. Once you have added or edited the
"CONFIG.SYS" file, YOU MUST RE-BOOT your computer for the changes to
take effect. Consult your DOS manual for additional information.
UPGRADING FROM EARLIER VERSIONS
If you are presently using an earlier version of OASIS and wish to
transfer your data from the earlier version to this version, before
installing this version of OASIS use the "BACKUP" option in the File
menu of your old version to copy your data files to a floppy
diskette. After completing the installation of this version, use the
"RESTORE" option in this version to copy your earlier version data
files into this version.
INSTALLATION (From Distribution Disk)
The program, data, and help files are contained in a self extracting
archive file named OASIS10.EXE. To extract the contents of this file
and install them on your hard disk, place the distribution diskette
in drive A and type the following commands:
A:
INSTALL C
You may install the program from the B drive by substituting "B" for
"A" in the above and you may install the files to a hard drive other
than C by substituting the appropriate drive letter for "C" in the
above. (Note: there is no colon (":") following the hard drive
letter in the install command).
After entering the install command, all files will be installed in a
subdirectory named "\OASIS" on the designated hard drive.
INSTALLATION (From BBS DOWNLOAD)
If you downloaded OASIS from a bulletin board or other data service,
you will have already extracted all files from the ZIP or other
archive file you downloaded. Create a directory on your hard drive
named "\OASIS" to hold the extracted files and copy all extracted
files to the new directory. Note: the original ZIP or other archive
file should be stored off on a floppy disk and kept as a backup.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
To run the OASIS type the following commands:
C:
CD \OASIS
OASIS
If you installed the program on a hard drive other than C, substitute
the appropriate drive letter for "C" in the above.
SAMPLE DATA
The data files shipped with the program contain sample data which is
provided to help you become familiar with the various options and
capabilities of the program. The sample data covers calendar year
1992.
LATE CHANGES
A new option named "Customer Profile" that is not documented in the
user's guide has been added to the customer menu. This option
produces a report detailing the products purchased by each customer.
The report, which can be generated for either a selected customer or
all customers lists the customer's name and address and the purchase
date and product code of each product purchased by that customer.
A new option named "Registration" has been added to the file menu.
This option provides for entry of your registration number and/or
printing of the order form. It replaces the "Print Order Form"
option in the help submenu and the "Registration No." option in the
Setup submenu.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
While every effort is made to insure that OASIS is free of any bugs,
it is impossible to test it on all makes and models of computers.
Therefore, unforeseen circumstances can occur which may create real
or perceived errors in the program. The following is a brief list of
errors which may be encountered and what to do about them.
Out of Memory or Insufficient Swap Space - You don't have enough
memory below 640K to run the program. If your computer has at least
512K of RAM, you should be able to eliminate this problem by removing
memory resident programs (TSR'S) and device drivers (mouse drivers,
network drivers, etc.) to free up memory. If you are using DOS 6.0,
removing the "NOEMS" switch from EMM386 in your CONFIG.SYS file may
solve the problem.
Program Locks Up - OASIS uses expanded memory, if available, to swap
sections of code in and out of memory. Some older disk cache
software does not expect this and can overwrite areas used by the
program. To prevent this, run the program with the following
command:
OASIS //BADCACHE
Program Aborts with Message (DOS error 04) - This means that
insufficient DOS file handles have been specified. If you have
already added the line FILES=21 to your CONFIG.SYS file AND rebooted
your computer, try increasing the number a few at a time. Reboot
your computer each time you increase the number.
Program Aborts with Message (DOS error 34) - This is a DOS file
sharing error. Run the DOS program SHARE.EXE before running OASIS.
If at any time you are unable to resolve a problem with this program,
call or write us a letter explaining the nature of the problem.
Please also include a description of your computer configuration
including any TSR programs which are installed. Send all
